Join Salon 1522 on Monday, Feb. 13th for the second installment of the Sit-In Political Film Series at the Fire Philadelphia (412 W. Girard Ave. Phila). Richard Lautenbach, founder of the Sit-In series will be presenting Werner Herzog’s interpretive documentary, “Lessons of Darkness” followed by a discussion of the film. “Lessons of Darkness”

In the aftermath of the Gulf War, retreating Iraqi soldiers left the oil fields of Kuwait a raging inferno. True to form as perhaps the world’s most death-defying filmmaker, Werner Herzog and a small camera crew arrived on the scene to film the carnage.

What resulted was Lessons of Darkness – less a simple documentary about an environmental catastrophe than it is an apocalyptic vision of hell. Herzog has created a science fiction film, in which our planet vanishes beneath pillars of flame, oceans of oil, and impenetrable clouds of smoke.

Punctuated by soaring music and Herzog’s own commentary, Lessons of Darkness is a powerful, breathtaking and strangely beautiful portrait of a world on fire. (description from liner notes)

Happy New Year!! 2011 was a great year for Salon 1522. We had a lot of fun and success bringing tremendous artists from Philadelphia and beyond to the space. We made a slew of new friends and proved once more to the Philadelphia art community that you can have a pleasant gallery experience. 2012 brings great shows and new developments at Salon 1522. Coming this year to Salon 1522 we have an exciting lineup of visual artists showing in the space as well as an installation and a group show. Check back here in the weeks to come for details. Don’t miss your opportunity to view new sculptures and drawings from this talented local artist in the intimate Salon 1522 gallery. Krevolin’s fluency with human anatomy and the physical medium allow him to capture and produce works of breathtaking depth and expression.

Salon 1522 presents an exhibition of new paintings by Philadelphia painters Ron Johnson and Shane Leddy. The opening reception for the show will be held Thursday, November 10th, 7-10 pm. The event is sponsored in part by YARDS Brewery.

Also join us on Sunday, November 13th for an Artist Brunch with Ron and Shane, who in addition to being world class painters; just happen to be world class bartenders and local superstars. Come eat blintzes and drink mimosas with the dynamic duo. Works will be on view at Salon 1522 from Nov 10-30, 2011.
